Leave it to the pull-no-punches, politically charged mind of John Leguizamo to dream up Kiss My Aztec!, a fresh, irreverent musical comedy take on the arrival of the conquistadors. Elizabethan dialect collides with modern slang set to a mashup of salsa, hip-hop and funk for this tale of an unlikely pair of Aztecs who mount a scrappy uprising against their Spanish oppressors — and somehow get entangled in the dysfunctional bickering of the Spanish viceroy’s family. If you loved Leguizamo’s Latin History for Morons (nominated for Tony’s Best Play), you won’t want to miss his latest work at Berkeley Repertory Theatre. Please note that John Leguizamo won’t be performing in Kiss My Aztec! — other fantastic actors will be starring in this uproarious new musical.

When she meets a bubbly blonde who is exceptionally popular, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships … until the world decides to call one “good,” and the other one “wicked.” With a thrilling score that includes the hits “Defying Gravity,” “Popular” and “For Good,” Wicked has been hailed by The New York Times as “the defining musical of the decade.” From the first electrifying note to the final breathtaking moment, the untold true story of the Witches of Oz transfixes audiences with its wildly inventive story. See this acclaimed musical at Seattle’s Paramount Theatre.

Donny Hathaway was an American jazz, blues, soul and gospel artist whose Grammy-winning work made him a major force on the music scene. But Hathaway was a troubled genius — a man who often refused to take the prescribed medication that was meant to help control the debilitating symptoms of his paranoid schizophrenia. Now, Mosaic Theater Company’s production of Twisted Melodies offers a fictionalized journey through that tortured and brilliant mind, giving you a glimpse into the life of a man lost in space and time as he battles a truly insidious mental illness. A theatrical experience that aims to captivate with its penetrating exploration of the psychology of a musical legend, Twisted Melodies at the Atlas Performing Arts Center in Washington, D.C. is also designed to open up conversation about the ways mental illness is treated in our society.

Written by Monty Python alum Eric Idle, Spamalot is a musical parody extravaganza that borrows lovingly (and unapologetically) from the film classic Monty Python and the Holy Grail. In telling the tale of King Arthur and his epic quest with the Knights of the Round Table, this absurd show — which won three Tony Awards, including Best Musical, during its original Broadway run — features beautiful showgirls and outlandish oddities such as flatulent Frenchmen, flying cows, killer rabbits and The Knights Who Say Ni. If you’re in need of an irreverent reminder to “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life,” look no further than Monty Python’s Spamalot in Delray Beach at Crest Theatre at Old School Square.

A theater company most terrible is about to stage a murder most foul … no good can come of this. Actually, these wannabe thespians will be lucky to make it through opening night without some real corpses stacking up, because this is The Play That Goes Wrong. And boy, does it. But what’s a chaotic series of mishaps for them makes for “the funniest play Broadway has ever seen” (Huffington Post) and proof that sometimes something’s so wrong it’s right. Broadway’s most award-winningest comedy, The Play That Goes Wrong has racked up more laurels than Caesar, conquering stages from Paris to London to Broadway, and now it’s returning to wreak hilarious havoc on New World Stages. See for yourself why Forbes said, “You’ll never have a better time in a theater!”

Simon Wiesenthal “the Nazi-hunter” was an ordinary man who did extraordinary things. His promise to the six million who died in concentration camps and to those that survive was “you will never be forgotten.” Starring award-winning actor and writer Tom Dugan, the one-man play Wiesenthal tells the incredibly compelling story of a holocaust survivor who was responsible for bringing over 1,100 Nazi war criminals to justice. Intelligent, funny, flawed and noble, Wiesenthal was a universal hero and was nicknamed the “Jewish James Bond.” His unbelievable dedication and tenacity over decades are honored in this play, which gives equal weight to his wisdom and wit during his long, purposeful life. Among the many that Wiesenthal helped bring to justice is chief of the Gestapo’s Jewish Department who implemented the Jewish genocide, Adolf Eichmann. After being challenged by Austrian Holocaust deniers to prove that Anne Frank actually existed, Wiesenthal located the Gestapo officer, Karl Silberbauer, who found and arrested Anne Frank and her family.

Native American playwright Kara Morrison’s Pocahontas breathes new life into the story of America’s first heroine. In this original telling, we meet Pocahontas just before she is set to leave her beloved home in Virginia to begin a new chapter with her husband, John Rolfe, in England. In the years prior to this period, Pocahontas was captured by English settlers to be used as a bargaining tool in their ongoing conflict with her father. Now married to Rolfe and kept away from her people, Pocahontas yearns to revisit her homeland. Rolfe joins his wife in the forest as she shares some of her cultural traditions and childhood memories. Through teaching and play, Pocahontas illuminates the role that Virginia’s unique vegetation, waterways and animals played in her day-to-day life. This world premiere of Pocahontas explores self-reflection and healing by reconnecting to one’s past, teaching us to appreciate life’s gifts in the present. Enjoy this authentic take on an important story at the Serenbe Playhouse.

Boasting sizzling songs, seductive dance numbers and a show biz story that packs a powerful punch, Chicago tells the tale of accused murderers Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly, who’ll stop at nothing to get the attention of the press and celebrity attorney Billy Flynn. During the showy decadence of the 1920s, their malicious crimes turn them into media darlings, producing a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which could just as easily be ripped from today’s tabloids. Once you’ve had your fill, hop out of the river for a hearty BBQ lunch, followed by a quick drive over to the award winning Vanish Farmhouse Brewery.

This fresh and unusual Tony-award winning musical is a coming-of-age parable, addressing and satirizing the anxieties associated with entering adulthood. Its characters lament that as children, they were assured by their parents, and by Sesame Street, that they were “extraordinary” and “could do anything.” But as adults, they have discovered, to their surprise, that in the real world their options are limited, and they are actually ordinary like everyone else. This quirky musical ranks 24th on the list of the longest-running shows in Broadway history. Avenue Q is notable for the use of puppets, animated by unconcealed puppeteers. The cast features the talents of Ashkhan Aref, Courtney Bruce, Joey Flint, Hartley Powers, Kristina Reyes, Harley Walker and Troy Whitaker. The design and production team includes Puppet Creations by Patrick Burke inspired by the Puppet Designs of Rick Lyon, Chris Winfield (Set Design), Addison Calvin (Lighting Design), Stephanie Colet (Costume Design), Steve Shaw (Sound Design), Patrick Skelton (Assistant Director), J. Christopher Sloan (Properties), Lisa McGee-Mann (Puppet Wrangler).

In the final months before 9/11, liberal Jewish studies professor Michael Fischer has reunited with his two sisters to celebrate their father’s 75th birthday. Each deeply invested in their own version of family history, the siblings clash over everything from Michael’s controversial scholarly work to the mounting pressures of caring for an ailing parent. As destructive secrets and long-held resentments bubble to the surface, the three negotiate — with biting humor and razor-sharp insight — just how much of the past they’re willing to sacrifice for a chance at a new beginning. If I Forget tells a powerful tale of a family and a culture at odds with itself. Enjoy this production at Victory Gardens Zacek McVay Theater in Chicago.
What if popularity came in a pill? Would you take it? In Be More Chill, achieving the “perfect life” is possible thanks to mysterious new technology — but it comes at a cost that’s not as easy to swallow. Rolling Stone calls it a “wow of a musical” with an “irresistible score.” Thrillingly exciting and comically subversive, this new musical takes on the competing voices in our heads, and ultimately proves there’s never been a better time in history to be yourself. Based on the novel by Ned Vizzini, Be More Chill brings the cool factor to New York’s Lyceum Theatre.

Is there a more drop-dead romantic song than Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova’s “Falling Slowly?” You might say yes, but then you might have to come to blows to defend that position against the song’s legion of devotees. It did, after all, inspire an Oscar-winning movie (also starring the real-life musical duo) and a multiple-Tony-winning Broadway musical and win a Grammy Award. Once the musical is a poignant ode to love, longing and the power of art, and now it makes its Bay Area regional premiere at The Gateway Theatre courtesy of 42nd Street Moon. A talented cast of actor-musicians play their own instruments as they bring to life Hansard and Irglova’s bittersweet songs, and the beautiful story they inspired.

Boasting a five-octave range, which she handles with beauty and ease, Shanice began her career scatting with the late great legendary Ella Fitzgerald for Kentucky Fried Chicken at the tender age of eight years old. At age 11, she would be discovered by John McClain of A&M records as she performed in the musical Get Happy, the music of Harold Arlen, at the Westwood Playhouse. She went on to become the grand champion of Star Search that same year. Her first album, Discovery on the A&M label, released when Shanice was just 14, would garner two urban hits, “Can You Dance?” and “No Half Steppin’”. It was her worldwide smash, “I Love Your Smile,” a number-one pop hit in 22 countries, which would bring her a Grammy nomination, Germany’s Golden Lion Award and international stardom at the age of 18! Shanice would become the very first recording artist to perform on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. With her phenomenal voice and delightful personality, Shanice has won the admiration of many of the music industry’s most respected names.

Endless critical and audience acclaim direct from Broadway. A sold-out run at The Public Theater. A record-breaking engagement at Berkeley Repertory Theatre. Latin History for Morons, the most unique show of the season, reveals America’s unsung heroes, throughout past and present — all unforgettably told by Tony and Emmy Award winner John Leguizamo, one of the most incisive, insightful and entertaining personalities on stage today. Inspired by the near total absence of Latinos from his son’s American history books, Leguizamo embarks on an outrageously funny, frenzied search to find a Latin hero for his son’s school history project. From a mad recap of the Aztec empire to stories of unknown Latin patriots of the Revolutionary War and beyond, Leguizamo breaks down the 3,000 years between the Mayans and Pitbull into 110 irreverent and uncensored minutes above and beyond his unique style. Don’t miss Latin History for Morons at The Bushnell in Hartford.
Broadway’s greatest farce promises to have audiences rolling in the aisles. This fast-paced, witty and irreverent comedy is one of the funniest musicals ever written. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum skillfully combines time-tested comedies of Roman playwright, Plautus, with the infectious energy of classic vaudeville. A nonstop laugh-fest in which crafty slave Pseudolus attempts to win the hand of the beautiful but slow-witted maiden, Philia, for his young master, Hero, in exchange for his own freedom. The plot rapidly twists and turns with cases of mistaken identity, slamming doors, bawdy innuendos and harebrained schemes. This unforgettable musical can be enjoyed at the Metropolis Performing Arts Centre in Arlington Heights.

Russell Hitchcock’s soaring tenor voice and Graham Russell’s simple yet majestic songs created Air Supply’s trademark sound. They were the first Western group to tour China, Taiwan and many more countries, with many of their songs each achieving millions of radio plays. Relive those huge hits with this concert at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.

Half a century later, gentrification issues arise when a black couple clashes with a white couple who wants to buy and remodel the same bungalow. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 2010 and the 2012 Tony Award for Best Play, the razor-sharp Clybourne Park now comes to Marietta’s New Theatre in the Square on the heels of the company’s production of A Raisin in the Sun.

As big and brash as its subject, Ink makes headlines with its colorful take on the birth of the British tabloid industry and its prescient prediction of the power of social media, resulting in six 2019 Tony nods, including Best Play. Set in swinging late ‘60s London, James Graham’s Faustian drama finds the Mephistophelian Rupert Murdoch (Tony winner Bertie Carvel) manipulating traditional Fleet Street journalist Larry Lamb (Jonny Lee Miller of Elementary) into selling his proverbial soul for a splashy new style of news reporting. But then Lamb’s got to lead his ragtag gang of underdog reporters on a mission to slaughter the staid competition. The Wall Street Journal calls this MTC drama at the Samuel Friedman Theatre in New York “indelibly entertaining,” while Ben Brantley of The New York Times has deemed it a Critic’s Pick, dubbing it “invigorating, abounding in adrenaline,” and calling out “the exquisite Bertie Carvel … and the terrific Jonny Lee Miller.” Director Rupert Goold also scored a Tony nod for his imaginative, industrial-inspired production.

Puffs, or: Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic follows the (non)-adventures of a wizard named Wayne, his two somewhat familiar friends and the lovably underachieving members of a particular house, who are left to sit on the sidelines as a certain star student and his pals experience all the evil-battling excitement. This “alternative narrative for the underdog” (The Wall Street Journal) gives the magically-challenged Wayne his own hilariously heroic seven-year journey, in a show The New York Times says “exudes a joyful, winking fondness for all things Harry.” Muggle-born and others are invited to check out the show at its new home at New York’s New World Stages.

Just in time for Game of Thrones’ final season, spoof musical Shame of Thrones returns to L.A. for more hilarious reimagining of the show’s backstabbing siblings, clever imps and dragon mamas, all set to an addictive rock score that’ll stick in your head (unless the king orders it off, natch).
