The Shins are a multiple Grammy nominated American band formed by James Mercer in Albuquerque in 1996. After a few years of self-financed singles, demos and van tours, the band was signed by Sub Pop Records who subsequently released its first three full length records. They helped redefine what indie rock could be, trading in low-fi grit for quirky pop melodies on earworms like "New Slang," "Know Your Onion!" and "Caring is Creepy." Four albums, millions of sales and a couple Grammy nominations later, The Shins and frontman James Mercer are still pushing the boundaries of indie rock. Their new album, Heartworms, brings their trademark insanely catchy melodies and wraps them up in ambitious, layered soundscapes. Don't miss it when The Shins hit the stage for this concert under the stars at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles.

The most successful American rock band of all time, Chicago has been hitting the Top 40 album charts for five decades. Bringing horns to the forefront of rock, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers scored an incredible string of hits (21 Top 10s in all), including "Saturday in the Park," "Beginnings," "If You Leave Me Now" and "25 or 6 to 4." The group began as a politically charged and often experimental rock band, fusing rock, jazz, funk and soul, and evolved into a softer sound with hit ballads like "Hard to Say I'm Sorry," "You're the Inspiration" and "Look Away." Today, Chicago is still going strong, with founding members Robert Lamm, Lee Loughnane, James Pankow and Walter Parazaider backed by a top-notch touring band. You can see these classic rock legends live in concert at the Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk.

But stay on your toes because the Headless Horseman may come thundering by at any moment on his real-life steed. But if the thought of things going bump in the night is just too much for you to handle, the Serenbe Playhouse is offering some decidedly less-scary daytime performances, suitable for the whole family. Come early for a Fall Festival, complete with a pumpkin patch, pumpkin decorating, s'mores making, fall games and more.

The play's most definitely the thing when it comes to Shakespeare's timeless tragedy, especially when you're talking about the Old Globe's sumptuous new production under the stars at Balboa Park's Lowell Davies Festival Theatre. The Bard's masterful mix of political drama, family saga and supernatural thriller finds the Prince of Denmark -- otherwise known as Hamlet -- disturbed by both his father's death and his mother's remarriage to his villainous uncle. And it only sends him further over the edge when he's visited by his father's ghost and tasked with avenging his murder. BroadwayWorld raves, "The Old Globe brings a smart, imaginative and powerful version to their San Diego stage that you don't want to miss. Grantham Coleman carries the title role, and he is excellent and eloquent as the Prince of Denmark."

She's set to be joined under the stars at the Ford Theatres by fellow vocalists Monica Mancini and Ledisi under the direction of Grammy-winning producer Gregg Field, Fitzgerald's former drummer.

Alice Childress' humorous yet heartbreaking look at race follows a cast of black and white actors attempting to mount a production of a "progressive" new show on Broadway in the 1950s. The play-within-the-play, an anti-lynching drama set in the South, marks the first opportunity for gifted black actress Wiletta Mayer to break through on Broadway -- but only if she can quiet her conscience when she realizes that the play may actually perpetuate the very stereotypes it's supposed to protest. This "scathingly funny, wise and extraordinary" (Washington Post) satire was written in 1955 at the dawn of the civil rights movement by Childress, and she became the first African-American woman to receive a professional production in New York. Enjoy this insightful exploration into race relations under the stars at the Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum in Topanga.

Alexandria was a city with Southern sympathies continuously occupied as a Northern supply depot. The women of Alexandria experienced the war not as a battle but as a day-to-day way of life. The National Women's History Museum shows how the war was not just fought with muskets and bayonets, but also with trade and supplies. You can experience the unique stories of a diverse group of women on this walking tour through history meeting at The Lyceum in Alexandria.

Abraham Lincoln was a crucial figure in American history, and many of the key events of his life and presidency took place right here in the heart of Washington, D.C. Although much of the city's character from the Civil War era is gone, many sights still evoke Lincoln's life and times -- and one of the expert guides from Washington Walks will show them to you. The busy Washington streets are not that different today than they would have been in the 1860s, when the president himself made his way through them -- except that 21st-century Washingtonians benefit from sidewalks and paved thoroughfares rather than dirt pathways. In Lincoln's day the area would have often been a muddy slog. As you walk on this two-hour guided tour, hear the fascinating story of the first American leader to be assassinated.
