The Shins are a multiple Grammy nominated American band formed by James Mercer in Albuquerque in 1996. After a few years of self-financed singles, demos and van tours, the band was signed by Sub Pop Records who subsequently released its first three full length records. They helped redefine what indie rock could be, trading in low-fi grit for quirky pop melodies on earworms like "New Slang," "Know Your Onion!" and "Caring is Creepy." Four albums, millions of sales and a couple Grammy nominations later, The Shins and frontman James Mercer are still pushing the boundaries of indie rock. Their new album, Heartworms, brings their trademark insanely catchy melodies and wraps them up in ambitious, layered soundscapes. Don't miss it when The Shins hit the stage for this concert under the stars at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles.

Among the familiar faces you might see spoofed at this Club Fugazi production: Lady Gaga, Barack and Michelle Obama, Kate Middleton and Adele. One of the most sought-after sopranos in the world, Martinez has appeared with respected companies like The Met, Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera and Royal Opera House, and is making her much-anticipated return to the LA Opera, after her acclaimed portrayal of Cio Cio San in 2016's Madama Butterfly.

Step into an overstocked emporium of wares and antiques, and be transported into the play's junk-shop realm, where owner Don and a couple buddies stage a misbegotten plot to steal back a valuable rare coin he accidentally sold away for too little. The banter-fueled heist drama that ensues pulls no punches with its terse and often vulgar language, made all the grittier by a space that puts you right in the heart of the action.

Among the greatest Brazilian guitarists of all time (high praise in a country steeped in a guitar-centric musical tradition), Yamandu Costa is as technically proficient as he is deeply soulful, attacking the nylon strings of his signature seven-string guitar "with a demonic playfulness ... as though he and his instrument were both being played by some virtuosic sprite, and he were merely an amazed observer" (Guitar Player Magazine). Combining traditional guitar styles like bossa nova, milonga, tango and samba into something totally new and totally exhilarating, Costa is truly a musical force of nature who must be seen and heard live to be believed. Experience this Brazilian phenom when Costa and his guitar take center stage at Herbst Theatre in the San Francisco War Memorial Building.

A true NYC institution, Chicago has everything that makes Broadway great: sizzling songs, seductive dance numbers and a show biz story that packs a powerful punch. Set amidst the showy decadence of the 1920s, Chicago tells the tale of convicted murderers Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly, who'll stop at nothing to get the attention of the press and celebrity attorney Billy Flynn. Their malicious crimes turn them into media darlings, producing a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which could just as easily be ripped from today's tabloids. A smash on Broadway (winning six Tony Awards) and on the big screen (winning six Academy Awards), this biting satire features the unforgettable songs of Kander and Ebb, including "All That Jazz," "Cell Block Tango" and many more hits. Enjoy this musical trip back to a time when a little razzle-dazzle made everything just fine in this dazzling production at the Ambassador Theatre in the heart of Broadway.

The psychedelic sexuality of the Rocky Horror Picture Show comes to the big top at San Francisco's Great Star Theatre, hosted and performed by an equally tantalizing and kooky cirque troupe. For this show, the Vespertine Circus has remade Rocky Horror cirque-style, bringing you the cult classic on a tight-wire, with sweethearts Brad and Janet more flexible than ever. As with a traditional screening of the late-night fave, costumes and audience participation are encouraged, with the request to "keep it sexy and weird." But this is not a screening; it's a full-on circus.

Far more than just a celebrated dance form, ballet has been nothing short of a national obsession in Russia for centuries. For this celebration of the Russian Masters at The Kennedy Center, the Washington Ballet will present four masterworks by Fokine, Ratmansky, Petipa and Balanchine that trace the roots of classical ballet, exploring how these choreographers have shaped and influenced our art form over the last 175 years (think of it as a crash course in Russian ballet). You'll see Fokine's Les Sylphides, a romantic reverie featuring music by Chopin that's widely considered to be the first ballet simply about mood and dance, and Ratmansky's Boléro, a meditation on modern society and its pressures set to Ravel. Then it's time for one of the most famous pas de deux of classical ballet repertoire (from Petipa's Le Corsaire) and a Biblical tale told through gorgeous movement: George Balanchine's mesmerizing Prodigal Son.

A touching story (in more ways than one) of sex, class, race and female awakening unfolds in the comedy In the Next Room (or The Vibrator Play). It's 1887, a time when electricity is still new, women are wearing bustles and corsets and doctors believe that women who are depressed, nervous or listless suffer from "hysteria." The cure for this unfortunate ailment according to Dr. Givings? You guessed it: a brilliant invention called the vibrator. Can the good doctor develop his invention under the watchful eye of his young wife? Ranging from tender to clever to comical, In the Next Room -- coming to Mountain View's Pear Theatre -- depicts how the vibrator transitioned from a medical tool to a consumer phenomenon; it's also a charming look at marriage, intimacy and the true meaning of love.

You might say that Pavel Sporcl is very much like the carbon fiber-infused blue violin he commissioned from violin maker Jan B. Spidlen: He manages to be traditional and yet highly modern at the same time. The Czech violinist's talent, passion and unorthodox approach to classical music have made him the most sought-after musician by both purists and young trailblazers alike. "There was a cabaret, and there was a master of ceremonies and there was a city called Berlin in a country called Germany. It was the end of the world ... and I was dancing with Sally Bowles and we were both fast asleep." So speaks the protagonist of this groundbreaking musical, ever so prescient in our current political climate. Set in 1931 at the dawn of the Nazi era, Cabaret revolves around young American writer Cliff Bradshaw and his relationship with Kit Kat Klub chanteuse Sally Bowles. This chilling classic reminds us that if we are not vigilant, the darkest parts of history are doomed to repeat themselves. Featuring a live orchestra and filled with some of the most memorable songs in theater history, including "Cabaret," Willkomen," and "Maybe This Time," Cabaret remains one of the sexiest, and most shocking, in the Broadway cannon. See it at the Barn Theatre outside of San Francisco, courtesy of Ross Valley Players.

Michael Jons is a kind of expert safe-cracker -- but instead of bank vaults, he manages to break inside something far more secure: the human brain. Any doubters need only attend his brilliant new show, Psychic Cabaret. During this lightning-paced performance, Jons astonishes the audience with his Sherlockian style of people-reading, his Svengali-like powers to persuade and, of course, his incredible ability to seemingly read the thoughts of total strangers. But the show's highlight is the dazzling variety of psychic readings that Jons does, instantly and memorably, for lucky spectators. Be there for what NewTimes declared "one of the best date nights of all time."

When was the last time you partied with a princess? OK, so you probably won't see any actual royalty at this party, but how about the princess of hip-hop and R&B? Ashanti's been called that once or twice, and she's got the awards and multiplatinum sales to back up the title. And if you want to sing along live to faves like "Foolish," "Always On Time" and "What's Luv," you'd usually have to do it surrounded by huge crowds. But for this special concert, Ashanti is hitting the stage at the intimate OHM Nightclub. This Hollywood hot spot will be hopping when she belts out her hits. After the performance, keep the party going by soaking up the view and sipping drinks on the Asian garden-style balcony, or head to the vintage-cool speakeasy of the OHM Lab.
