The Shins: Indie-Rock Gods at the Greek

Buy Tickets $30 - $39.50 $39.50

The Shins are a multiple Grammy nominated American band formed by James Mercer in Albuquerque in 1996. After a few years of self-financed singles, demos and van tours, the band was signed by Sub Pop Records who subsequently released its first three full length records. They helped redefine what indie rock could be, trading in low-fi grit for quirky pop melodies on earworms like "New Slang," "Know Your Onion!" and "Caring is Creepy." Four albums, millions of sales and a couple Grammy nominations later, The Shins and frontman James Mercer are still pushing the boundaries of indie rock. Their new album, Heartworms, brings their trademark insanely catchy melodies and wraps them up in ambitious, layered soundscapes. Don't miss it when The Shins hit the stage for this concert under the stars at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles.

Carmen: Bizet's Red-Hot Revenge Opera

Buy Tickets $131 - $199 $164 - $249

With its dazzling costumes and choreography, passion-filled story, famous score (you've definitely heard "The Toreador Song") and Grammy-winner Ana María Martínez starring in the title role, the LA Opera's production of Bizet's Carmen is sure to be a stunner. An alluring Spanish gypsy girl with a hot temper, Carmen seduces the innocent Don José, who gives up everything for her, leaving his former love, rebelling against his superiors and joining a gang of smugglers. But Carmen's not exactly the type to settle down. So when she tires of him and moves on to the bullfighter Escamillo, Don José is driven by betrayal and jealousy to exact violent revenge. One of the most sought-after sopranos in the world, Martinez has appeared with respected companies like The Met, Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera and Royal Opera House, and is making her much-anticipated return to the LA Opera, after her acclaimed portrayal of Cio Cio San in 2016's Madama Butterfly.

Combining traditional guitar styles like bossa nova, milonga, tango and samba into something totally new and totally exhilarating, Costa is truly a musical force of nature who must be seen and heard live to be believed. Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice is both a delightful love story and a biting social satire that remains popular 200 years after its publication, for both its wit and its emotional resonance. Mr. and Mrs. Bennett have limited means and several daughters to marry off, so when two eligible young men arrive in the area, it seems like a dream come true. But when the strong-willed and intelligent Elizabeth Bennett meets the aloof but honest Mr. Darcy, a chain of events is set in motion that turns the Bennett household topsy-turvy. See this classic romance, in a new adaptation from Kate Hamill, when it comes to Seattle Rep's Bagley Wright Theatre.

Chicago on Broadway: The Red-Hot, Tony-Winning Musical ("All That Jazz")

Buy Tickets $33 - $95 $49.50 - $149

A true NYC institution, Chicago has everything that makes Broadway great: sizzling songs, seductive dance numbers and a show biz story that packs a powerful punch. Set amidst the showy decadence of the 1920s, Chicago tells the tale of convicted murderers Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly, who'll stop at nothing to get the attention of the press and celebrity attorney Billy Flynn. Their malicious crimes turn them into media darlings, producing a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which could just as easily be ripped from today's tabloids. A smash on Broadway (winning six Tony Awards) and on the big screen (winning six Academy Awards), this biting satire features the unforgettable songs of Kander and Ebb, including "All That Jazz," "Cell Block Tango" and many more hits. Enjoy this musical trip back to a time when a little razzle-dazzle made everything just fine in this dazzling production at the Ambassador Theatre in the heart of Broadway.

Far more than just a celebrated dance form, ballet has been nothing short of a national obsession in Russia for centuries. For this celebration of the Russian Masters at The Kennedy Center, the Washington Ballet will present four masterworks by Fokine, Ratmansky, Petipa and Balanchine that trace the roots of classical ballet, exploring how these choreographers have shaped and influenced our art form over the last 175 years (think of it as a crash course in Russian ballet). You'll see Fokine's Les Sylphides, a romantic reverie featuring music by Chopin that's widely considered to be the first ballet simply about mood and dance, and Ratmansky's Boléro, a meditation on modern society and its pressures set to Ravel. Then it's time for one of the most famous pas de deux of classical ballet repertoire (from Petipa's Le Corsaire) and a Biblical tale told through gorgeous movement: George Balanchine's mesmerizing Prodigal Son.

A touching story (in more ways than one) of sex, class, race and female awakening unfolds in the comedy In the Next Room (or The Vibrator Play). It's 1887, a time when electricity is still new, women are wearing bustles and corsets and doctors believe that women who are depressed, nervous or listless suffer from "hysteria." The cure for this unfortunate ailment according to Dr. Givings? You guessed it: a brilliant invention called the vibrator. Can the good doctor develop his invention under the watchful eye of his young wife? Ranging from tender to clever to comical, In the Next Room -- coming to Mountain View's Pear Theatre -- depicts how the vibrator transitioned from a medical tool to a consumer phenomenon; it's also a charming look at marriage, intimacy and the true meaning of love.

Shen Wei Dance Arts Makes Its "Mesmerizing" Chicago Debut

Buy Tickets $30 $68

It's been nearly a decade, but ask anyone who watched the 2008 Beijing Olympics and they probably still recall its jaw-dropping Opening Ceremony. Now the man behind the spectacle, MacArthur "Genius" Award-winning Chinese-American choreographer Shen Wei, brings his stunning choreography to Chicago for the very first time. Prepare for "gorgeous visual imagery" (The London Times) and a "mesmerizing flow of invention" (The Boston Globe) as his modern dance company, Shen Wei Dance Arts, performs two works at the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University: Folding, which conjures up a dreamlike world that draws "gasps of wonder and contemplation" from the audience (San Francisco Chronicle), and Rite of Spring like you've never seen it before, set on a grey and white geometric floor painting with dancers spiraling, spinning and corkscrewing effortlessly to the music.

A Tony winner for The Little Dog Laughed, stage and screen favorite Julie White (Nurse Jackie, Transformers), Obie winner Stephen McKinley Henderson (Fences, Between Riverside and Crazy) and Erin Wilhelmi (Broadway's The Crucible) join Tony winner Jayne Houdyshell (The Humans) in the hit Broadway sequel to Ibsen's groundbreaking 19th-century drama A Doll's House at the Golden Theatre. Well ahead of its time for its depiction of Nora, a wife and mother whose search for self-worth leads her to leave her unhappy marriage, A Doll's House signaled a move toward realism and feminism in theater. Now in Part 2, we'll witness what happens many years later when Nora shows up on that same doorstep, courtesy of up-and-coming playwright Lucas Hnath (Obie-winning The Christians, Red Speedo). Called "explosively funny" by the Hollywood Reporter, the play earned eight 2017 Tony nominations, along with raves from The New York Times as "the best play of the year" and "great comedy."

Buy Tickets $60 - $75 $125 - $131.05

L.A. might not have a whole lot of lakes, but we do have 16 NBA Championships to our name -- which happens to make our beloved Lakers one of the most dominant franchises in all of sports. And there's only one way to watch the best: in style (this is L.A., after all). Okay, so maybe you won't be shelling out for courtside seats between Jack and Leo, but that's not the only way to live it up while this exciting young team tears it up on the court. The STAPLES Center's Premier Level seating and Suites both treat you to a bit of the V.I.P. experience. Forget standing in concessions lines, because you can get everything from high-end burgers and sushi to scotch and margaritas served to you without leaving your Premier Level seats. And you won't want to miss a single play with this 200 Level view of the action. Or kick back in a climate-controlled private suite, catch that slam-dunk instant replay on the in-suite plasma TVs and enjoy the game in luxury as the Lakers go for 17.

Cabaret: The Sexy, Dark Broadway Classic

Buy Tickets $13.50 - $16 $27 - $32

"There was a cabaret, and there was a master of ceremonies and there was a city called Berlin in a country called Germany. It was the end of the world ... and I was dancing with Sally Bowles and we were both fast asleep." So speaks the protagonist of this groundbreaking musical, ever so prescient in our current political climate. Set in 1931 at the dawn of the Nazi era, Cabaret revolves around young American writer Cliff Bradshaw and his relationship with Kit Kat Klub chanteuse Sally Bowles. This chilling classic reminds us that if we are not vigilant, the darkest parts of history are doomed to repeat themselves. Featuring a live orchestra and filled with some of the most memorable songs in theater history, including "Cabaret," Willkomen," and "Maybe This Time," Cabaret remains one of the sexiest, and most shocking, in the Broadway cannon. See it at the Barn Theatre outside of San Francisco, courtesy of Ross Valley Players.

"New York's sexiest literary event" (Time Out New York) slinks its way to Boston with a bona fide American poetry icon: former U.S. poet laureate Robert Pinsky. But this ain't your mama's MFA poetry reading. Inspired by the fin-de-siècle bordellos in Paris and New Orleans, The Poetry Brothel is a uniquely immersive experience that takes poetry outside the classroom and plants it in the lush interiors of a bordello, with a rotating cast of poets-in-character who share their work in "spontaneous eruptions of poetry." Of course, any true brothel needs a good cover: The Poetry Brothel's is an immersive cabaret, offering live jazz, burlesque dancers, painters and fortunetellers. This premiere event at OBERON in Cambridge will feature some of New York's favorite performers (including burlesque beauty Ginny Nightshade and aerialists The Lost Boys of Circus Solaris), along with guest readers Robert Pinsky and Steph Burt.

The top sleuth even wins a prize package at the end of the evening -- not to mention serious bragging rights.

Ashanti: R&B and Hip-Hop Star

Buy Tickets $25 $50

When was the last time you partied with a princess? OK, so you probably won't see any actual royalty at this party, but how about the princess of hip-hop and R&B? Ashanti's been called that once or twice, and she's got the awards and multiplatinum sales to back up the title. And if you want to sing along live to faves like "Foolish," "Always On Time" and "What's Luv," you'd usually have to do it surrounded by huge crowds. But for this special concert, Ashanti is hitting the stage at the intimate OHM Nightclub. This Hollywood hot spot will be hopping when she belts out her hits. After the performance, keep the party going by soaking up the view and sipping drinks on the Asian garden-style balcony, or head to the vintage-cool speakeasy of the OHM Lab.
