This recently renewed and updated production of the The Secret Garden may be headed back to Broadway after successful runs in Seattle and DC, where The Washington Post called it "smart and sensitive" and "blessedly grownup." Now coming to Houston's Hobby Center courtesy of Theatre Under the Stars (TUTS), this magical Tony-winning musical transports you to a lonely old house on a windswept moor, where the recently orphaned Mary has come to live with her reclusive uncle and his sickly son. Soon she discovers The Secret Garden, and with the help of her friend and cousin, she blossoms, bringing new life to both the grounds and her grieving relative. Transporting audiences from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus, narrator the Cat in the Hat tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child who gets in trouble for thinking too many "thinks." Horton's challenge is twofold - not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must also guard an abandoned egg that's been left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant in this youth production at Fountain Hills Youth Theater just outside Phoenix.

This musical from legendary masterminds Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice is the perfect Sunday Funday family activity, featuring Patrick Cassidy and reimagined choreography by Dave Scott (So You Think You Can Dance). Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is based on the "coat of many colors" story from a Bible story, and follows Joseph, whose father gives him a gorgeous multi-hued cloak as a gift. Green with envy over the garment, Joseph's brothers sell him into slavery, and he ends up in Egypt, where he manages to rescue the country from famine, with a little help from an Elvis-esque pharaoh. If you're looking for a musical that includes hip-hop dancing and nonstop singing, you'll definitely dig this one, which features an oddly amazing assortment of genres like country, rock, hip-hop and even calypso.
